Railway ministry prolongs running time of 74 pairs of temporary trains
BEIJING, Feb. 22 (Xinhua)-- The Ministry of Railways decided Tuesday to prolong the running time of 74 pairs of temporary trains to the end of February due to passenger flow remaining high in major stations.
Since the Chinese have the tradition of family reunion during the Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar New Year, the ministry set a special transportation plan for the 40 peak travel days, including launching more temporary trains. The plan was scheduled to end Feb. 22.
The ministry will launch 301 pairs of temporary nonstop trains during this Spring Festival holiday.
Officials with the ministry said that though most people have gone back to their work or school, passengers to Northwest China and some large cities will remain for a period of time.
Tickets from Wuchang, Hankou and Chengdu, cities in central and south China, to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are still in short supply. The ministry said, besides the 74 pairs, the running time of more temporary trains will be prolonged if necessary.
Passenger flow by highways reached 44.6 million Tuesday, 510,000 fewer than Monday, almost the same level as on ordinary days. Part of the stations have resumed regular bus services. During the peak travel days buses were launched only when full.
