Qwest Lays Off 55, Union Official Says

By The Denver Post

Feb. 23--Qwest laid off 55 people this week, 10 of them in Denver, a union official said.

Laid-off information-technology workers in Denver have three months to find other jobs in the company under union rules, said Dale Feller, secretary-treasurer of the Communication Workers of America Local 7777. The workers keep computers and telephones working at Qwest offices.

An unconfirmed number of managers were also escorted out of the building Tuesday, Feller said.

Qwest spokesman Bob Toevs declined to confirm specific layoffs, saying only that the company will "continually adjust our workforce to meet the needs of the business." Qwest has 39,348 workers operating in its largely Western 14-state region.

At the same time, the former Baby Bell is looking to hire contract workers through Denver-based employment company Remy Corp., said Andrew Albarelle, principal executive officer. It also said Tuesday it plans to hire about 600 people at a call center in Utah.
