Feb. 24--NEW YORK -- Global shipments of plasma display televisions surged 109 percent in 2005 from the previous year to about 5.9 million units, lifted largely by robust year-end sales, according to a survey by a U.S. market research and consulting firm released Thursday.
Strong sales in the final quarter of last year come from a fall in prices of such TVs, reflecting fierce sales competition, DisplaySearch said.
Plasma TVs, however, lost share relative to liquid crystal display TVs due to supply constraints, it said.
Global plasma TV shipments for the October-December quarter reached 2.7 million units, or around 40 percent of shipments for all of 2005, with those in Europe climbing 144 percent from a year earlier and those in Japan doubling, the firm said.
Shipments in the United States and China in the three-month period rose more than 70 percent from a year earlier. But the growth of LCD TV shipments exceeded that of plasma TV shipments, it said.
By manufacturer, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. of Japan, known for its Panasonic brand, ranked top in 2005 plasma TV shipments, followed by LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., both of South Korea.
