Movaz Networks Launches Secure Optical Networking Solution for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Movaz Networks, the global provider of all-optical networking solutions, today announced the implementation of a secure regional optical network for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
PNNL, one of the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratories, has substantially increased the capacity and speed of the laboratory's network connection from its campus in southeastern Washington State to Seattle. At the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) in Seattle, PNNL has direct access to other national laboratories through the DOE Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) and UltraScience Network, as well as other PNWGP member institutions. The fiber and facilities utilized by PNNL, combined with the size, performance, and flexibility of the Movaz RAYexpress optical platform, create a reliable private network now supporting six 10 Gbps channels and engineered for growth to at least 20 channels with no interruption in service.
The project began with researchers at PNNL needing increased network capacity to interact with other Department of Energy laboratories. Starting with six 10 Gbps circuits, they required a DWDM optical network that is compact, easy to manage, and scalable with efficient upgrade capability. PNNL's secure fiber and Movaz's optical networking solution provide services that enable innovative scientific research essential to advancing national, economic, and energy security.
With the Movaz RAYexpress optical add/drop multiplexer, PNNL significantly decreased the size and cost of equipment necessary to increase bandwidth, critical to the laboratory's research programs. The RAYexpress supports mixed 10G/2.5G services and a wide selection of telecommunications and data client interfaces. The RAYexpress easily scales to 40 channels, and since the equipment is 40 Gbps-ready, the total transport capacity can eventually reach 1600 Gbps.
