Cloudmark Introduces Mail Store Clean-Up Service to Free Critical Storage Space on Service Provider Networks

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Cloudmark Inc. introduced its new StorageScan(TM) service for service provider networks. The StorageScan service provides an automated scan of message stores, which may be wasting up to 25 percent of storage space on bona fide spam e-mail. The solution supports service provider efforts to more economically deliver increased storage capabilities to their subscribers, as well as reduce customer concerns related to premature aging-out of stored mail.
With spam accounting for more than 90 percent of all e-mail traffic, mail stores at providers with typical anti-abuse solutions can rapidly fill with wasted and unnecessarily held "bad" e-mail. In conducting reviews of numerous service provider networks, Cloudmark noted that, on average, over 50 percent of messages on existing mail stores is comprised of spam missed by legacy technology. The Cloudmark StorageScan service can provide an automatic rescan of stored messages to effectively delete all known spam from storage, relieving burden on the message stores, the webmail server, and the storage area network, as well as simplifying maintenance tasks as number of items in the message store is significantly reduced. Clean-up can release more than 70 percent of stored e-mail, to achieve a reduction in storage requirements of 15-to-25 percent and significant cost savings.
According to Robert Werner, vice president of North American sales, Openwave Systems, Inc., "Storage space wasted by spam is becoming an increasingly significant problem for service providers, especially as they experience pressure from their customers as their competitors begin to offer unlimited or greatly increased storage space. When 90 percent of e-mail traffic is junk mail, this load can be significant, and is now unnecessary. Reducing the message store can help to decrease costs for operations and capital expenditures that can be applied to more valuable areas, such as more rapid and efficient processing of increasing mail volumes."
"Effective storage scanning is possible when service providers can be assured of a high rate of accuracy and fast performance scanning, two areas where Cloudmark continuously demonstrates leadership. Our near-zero false positive rate means that service providers can reduce their stored messages with confidence, knowing that only those messages that are truly identified as spam will be deleted. Cloudmark's high performing scanning engine allows large message stores to be scanned quickly, without bogging down existing systems," commented Jamie de Guerre, director of partner program management at Cloudmark. "This service will enable service providers to increase the storage size they provide to customers without needing to make nearly as significant trade-offs with storage cost," he added.
Cloudmark's StorageScan service offers the following benefits: -- Control: cleansing actions are determinable by customer. -- Superior performance: Cloudmark's high performance makes this solution feasible as slower engines are too resource-intensive -- Improved user satisfaction: greater actual store for legitimate mail without a loss of desired mail. -- Ease: this operation is performed offline without affecting current operations.
