JDSU Introduces Portable 40/43G and Jitter/Wander Test Solution to Support Triple-Play Bandwidth Growth at the Core of the Network

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU; TSX: JDU) today introduced the industry's first all-in-one portable tester for 40/43G networks. Combining 40/43G optical and electrical interfaces with jitter and wander in JDSU's ONT-506 and ONT-512 testers, the solution was developed to help address the bandwidth demands being placed on metro and long haul networks by the rapid deployment of triple-play services.

The 40/43G module for the ONT-506 and ONT-512 supports the research and development, service verification testing and production needs of network equipment manufacturers, as well as the equipment verification, installation and maintenance requirements of service providers. The new module will be introduced at OFC/NFOEC 2006 in Anaheim, California, March 5-10 (booth 2323) and CeBIT 2006 in Hannover, Germany, March 9-16 (booth B20, Hall 13).
While 40G (OC-768/STM-256), presently the fastest transmission rate for SONET and SDH networks, is still in the early stages of deployment, it is experiencing accelerated growth in core networks to accommodate the widespread introduction of triple-play services. These new, high bit-rate networks create new challenges for equipment vendors by pushing the boundaries of physics and demanding that every network element be designed, installed and tuned with extreme precision. Network operators are also challenged by the need to reduce operating expenses while adding new revenue-generating services, some of which already require optical transport equipment that supports data rates higher than 10G.
"New 40/43G networks will allow manufacturers and service providers to further enhance transport capacity in the optical network, extend distances between systems, and improve flexibility and responsiveness in new high-bandwidth services," said Bernhard Mueller, general manager for JDSU's optical transport Test and Measurement group. "JDSU has a set of solutions based on our heritage of 40G testers that will help network operators and equipment manufacturers meet the challenges associated with the deployment of these high bandwidth networks."
Technical features for the 40/43G module include concatenated and fully structured signals for SONET OC-768/ SDH STM-256, OTN OTU-3 (G.709 FEC) with bulk or SONET/SDH client, unframed 39.813 Gbps and 43.018 Gbps BER testing, and complete alarm, error, overhead, and pointer generation and analysis for SONET/SDH and OTN. JDSU's 40/43G jitter/wander solution is compliant to ITU-T O.172/O.173 and provides the full set of jitter measurement capabilities -- jitter generation, jitter tolerance, and jitter transfer, which help during the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of SDH/SONET/OTN systems. The ITU-T O.172 Appendix VII-based calibration procedure using a reference transmitter provides a guaranteed accuracy specification. Additional features of the product's jitter/wander capabilities include wander analysis of TIE, MTIE, TDEV, frequency offset and drift rate with graphs and built-in masks.
About the JDSU ONT-506/512 Optical Network Tester
The JDSU ONT-506/512 40/43G solutions are the newest addition to the company's successful line of ONT testers. The ONT platform is a multi- functional, multi-port and multi-user solution for fast and flexible testing of optical network environments. The ONT is designed to address the optical and digital testing needs in R&D, SVT and maintenance. JDSU offers a choice of ONT platforms covering rack-mountable and portable mainframes, and a range of plug-in instrument modules for DWDM, SDH, SONET, OTN, EoS, and Ethernet networks controlled via an easy-to-use user interface. Designed to keep pace with the high-speed evolution of today's communications technology, ONT is the essential test tool for manufacturers, early technology installers and operator's verification lab and tier 3 support of optical fiber networks.
