UK: Five Local Ethnic Radio Stations Awarded Broadcast Licences

On 16 February the British independent broadcast regulator Ofcom published details of a further 21 new FM broadcast licences recently issued to community radio stations throughout the UK. Following are details of five of the stations which are London/Home Counties- based and which broadcast specifically to local ethnic audiences:

- NuSound Radio

Based in Forest Gate, East London, NuSound Radio broadcasts to the large South Asian community in the area. The station broadcasts local news, information and music in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil, Gujarati, Bengali and English. The website can be found at www.nusoundradio.com

- Voice of Africa Radio

The station's website says it serves the whole of the African community in London, particularly youth, black business community, associations, charities and social services. Based in Newham, East London, Voice of Africa Radio broadcasts in several languages, including Yoruba, Akan, French and English. The website can be found at www.voiceofafricaradio.com

- Radio Ummah

This station's website at www.radioummah.com is currently inaccessible. However, according to the UK-based Muslim News website, this is "the world's first 24-hour Islamic Internet radio station." The Ofcom website says this Forest Gate-based station broadcasts to the 300,000 Muslims of East London, and in particular, the boroughs of Newham and Redbridge.

- Asian Star

Based in Slough, Berkshire, Asian Star Radio broadcasts to a broad Asian audience in various languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and English. Programmes include local news and topical debates as well as music. The website can be found at www.asianstarradio.co.uk

- Westside Community Radio

Based in Southall, Middlesex, Westside Community Radio broadcasts as a multi-racial station to the West London community aimed generally at a black audience. Programme schedules include chat and debate shows, and also music ranging from Bhangra to Hip-Hop. The website can be found at www.westsideradio.co.uk
