Oki Electric Selects Entropic Communications' C.LINK(TM) for Distribution of Entertainment in New Broadband Home Gateway

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 March 2006, 15:00 CST

Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE:6703) has chosen Entropic Communications' c.LINK(TM) chipset as the cornerstone of its upcoming BB MediaRouter (BBMR), intended for multiple dwelling units (MDUs such as apartments and condominiums).

The BBMR is a multi-capability platform connecting various technologies and delivery mediums into a single and cohesive home networking solution that is easy to install by service providers and easy to use by consumers.

Oki chose Entropic's c.LINK because of its price, performance, QoS and security advantages over competing technologies, and because coax is the best medium for whole-home distribution of entertainment.

"c.LINK offers the best price/performance advantages for delivery of uninterrupted video throughout the home. It blends well with other technologies which enable us to develop and deliver a platform that connects the various services in the home without the need for new wires or costly installation charges by the consumer," said Keizo Ikeda, President of Media-network Appliance Company at Oki Electric.

Oki's BBMR offers a variety of connectivity and networking options that optimize voice, data and video. With Entropic's c.LINK built in, this home gateway offers guaranteed bandwidth of more than 100 Mbps from any coaxial cabling outlet, while leveraging the already existing infrastructure.

Coax offers other advantages as well. For instance, it was intended from the beginning to carry video so it is well understood by the cable multiple service operators (MSOs).

In addition, with its myriad options regarding wired and wireless connectivity, service providers and network operators can offer a variety of services in a bundled package that fits the price and usage habits of every consumer.

The BBMR will be available in Q206. Initial deployment is through MSOs and network operators.

"The networked home represents a large entertainment service market that is gathering momentum. With Oki's BBMR, distribution of entertainment is much easier and less costly and thus is very appealing to the service provider and the consumer," said John Graham, VP of marketing, Entropic Communications
