Mar. 1--The Arizona State baseball team scored five runs in the first inning, and freshman pitcher-designated hitter Ike Davis belted a grand slam in the sixth en route to a 13-5 victory over Texas Tech on Tuesday night at Packard Stadium.
The Sun Devils (11-5), ranked 17th in the coaches' poll, won for the sixth time in seven games.
Davis, a Chaparral High School product, went 2-for-4 with five RBIs. The home run was the first of Davis' collegiate career and the first grand slam of his life, Davis said after the game.
Left fielder Ryan Sontag went 2-for-4 and led off the first inning with a home run, his first as a Sun Devil.
Though Davis worked only 4 1 /3 innings, he was chosen the winning pitcher because he was on a predetermined pitch count. He allowed six hits and four runs (two earned) with a walk and three strikeouts.
Second baseman Joe Persichina went 3-for-5 for the Sun Devils.
Mike Jones, who is a wide receiver on the ASU football team, made his debut with the baseball team, catching the final out in center field.
Miles Morgan took the loss for the Red Raiders, who drop to 9-4. Morgan is now 2-1 on the year.
ASU will play host to a three-game series against the Auburn Tigers beginning Friday night.
