Telecom Samoa has announced that it is investing 5.5m US dollars in a GSM mobile phone network. The chairman of Telecom Samoa, Anthony Briscoe, says the company wants to provide the technology that will best meet the needs of its 26,000 customers. The multinational company, Ericsson, will build the network. The GSM network will allow Telecom Samoa to cover about 95 per cent of Samoa’s populated areas. Generators are to be installed at specially chosen sites so that, during cyclones, customers will still be able to connect.
