Ohio's Miami University Receives $1 Million Gift from Alumnus

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 January 2004, 06:00 CST

Jan. 26--OXFORD, Ohio -- An alumnus has given Miami University a $1 million gift of six fiber strands used for Internet high-speed broadband telecommunications.

"The vision is to give the students of Butler County access to the world," said 1985 graduate Robert C. Schuler of Dublin, Ohio, who made the donation. "Hopefully, at some point, some of the local school districts will be able to use some of Miami's resources."

The new fiber strands bring MU's strand count to 18. MU leases 12 strands of the Butler County Fiber Optic Network Loop for communication among its three Ohio campuses.

The Butler County loop has 96 strands that deliver voice, data and video communication over more than 100 miles to link Oxford, Hamilton, Middletown and Evendale.

Butler County commissioners developed the network backbone to attract high-tech business and to serve government offices, schools and businesses.

The six fibers will expand the university's outreach by improving fiber optic connections to Hamilton County and OARNet, the university's Internet service provider, said Dave Stonehill, MU senior associate for executive initiatives, as well as connect MU to the Third Frontier Network, which is part of Gov. Bob Taft's project to promote research and technology jobs in Ohio.
