Bodies of Work at the Central Coast Tattoo and Music Festival (With Slideshow of Tattoos)

Posted on: Monday, 6 March 2006, 09:00 CST

By Abraham Hyatt, The Tribune, San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Mar. 6--Surrounded by the buzzing of dozens of tattoo guns, crowds of stroller-pushing families and heavily tattooed bikers alike ambled through the Paso Robles Event Center, formerly the California Mid-State Fairgrounds, as top tattoo shops from around the southern half of California showed off their wares and skills over the weekend.

In front of each tattoo shop's booth at the Central Coast Tattoo and Music Festival, people flipped through photo albums of swirling, multicolored designs and watched as artists from each shop inked their fellow attendees.

On a stage in the center of the building, Tom Allen called out the names of the winners of a tattoo contest, which included a category for the weirdest tattoo.

The only stall ignored by attendees was home to a company called Dr. TattOff.

"All tattoos can be at least significantly reduced," the company's brochures claimed. But it's not cheap: The laser process, which can take several sessions, costs $39 a square inch.
