Tokyo, March 6 (Jiji Press)--Toshiba Corp. is considering building a new facility to produce NAND flash memory chips, used in portable digital music players and other devices, informed sources said Monday.
Investment in the new facility is expected to reach hundreds of billions of yen, part of which is likely to be put up by U.S. electronic products maker SanDisk Corp., a business partner of Toshiba, the sources said.
Toshiba, the second largest NAND flash memory maker in the world, hopes to boost its competitiveness through the investment, the sources said.
Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea is the leading player in the NAND flash memory market. Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. of the United States plan to enter the market through a joint venture.
Toshiba may possibly build the new facility in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, central Japan, where it already operates a chip plant, the sources said.END
