Unitrends Extends Continuous Systems Protection to Exchange Servers

Posted on: Tuesday, 7 March 2006, 09:00 CST

COLUMBIA, S.C., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Unitrends(TM) (http://www.unitrends.com/), a pioneer in the development of Business Systems Continuity solutions, today announced the immediate availability of Continuous Exchange Protection (CEP), enabling small and mid-sized enterprises to recover critical email from crashed or failed servers, from server-level failure all the way down to individual messages, as part of their offering at no additional charge.

Continuous Exchange Protection, the first true real-time, complete data protection solution specifically designed for Microsoft Exchange, the world's most popular messaging and collaboration server, brings these companies greater ability to ensure that their information will be available at any given point after a server or system failure. This is an increasingly crucial business requirement, since email is a critical business application in today's work environment, particularly for those firms facing challenges from a myriad of government compliance regulations.

"The ability to quickly access and recover lost messages has evolved into an absolute requirement," said Mark Phillippi, Unitrends' vice president of product management. "This is true, even at mid-level organizations. For these firms, that requirement adds yet one more task to IT staffs already overburdened. Continuous Exchange Protection is specifically designed to solve this challenge, making it easier for companies to comply with the regulations without having to devote significant time or resources to the effort."

CEP's introduction follows, and is consistent with, Unitrends' recently announced Continuous Systems Protection initiative, specifically designed to help small and mid-sized enterprises rapidly recover a lost file or entire systems, including operating systems, applications and data from failed servers, in a simple, turnkey approach and helping them get back in business within minutes. In doing so, Unitrends' Rapid Recovery System appliances provide recovery capabilities similar to the speed available to the world's largest companies, at a fraction of the cost.

CEP functionality, now included in all of Unitrends' Data Protection Unit(TM) (DPU) appliances, allows backups from an Exchange server to a DPU to occur either on a scheduled basis or in an instantaneous mode, with each transaction simultaneously mirrored to the DPU as the Exchange server processes it.

CEP's transaction-level support includes the full range of Exchange services, including email, contacts and calendaring. Each transaction, both incoming and outgoing, is mirrored, and stored as a database element on the DPU, providing the ability to restore data at any level (message, mailbox or entire server) at any point in time. Literally, Unitrends' Continuous Exchange Protection makes recovery available at any level of granularity.

"Continuous Exchange Protection is great news for Unitrends' customers. The ability to recover information almost instantaneously at either a mailbox or message level is now a requirement for many SME IT teams," said Brad O'Neill, senior analyst at the Taneja Group. "Compared to the alternative of do-it-yourself integration, Unitrends' turnkey offering is a clear winner in both economic and time savings. Expect to see this kind of appliance-based approach to email protection gain strong momentum in 2006," O'Neill added.

Continuous Exchange Protection is now included as part of Unitrends' Rapid Recovery System, and is available at no additional charge to existing customers who have a current maintenance agreement.
