NEW YORK, March 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FiberNet Telecom Group, Inc. , a leading provider of complex interconnection services, today announced that it has established an agreement with Columbia University to research Voice-over-IP (VoIP) peering architectures. Professor Henning Schulzrinne, Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Columbia University and one of the world's leading authorities on Internet Protocol (IP) technologies, will lead the research effort which will address topics including VoIP interconnection topologies, security relationships, number mapping, call routing efficiency, codec and media translation, authentication, and back-up and emergency routing services.
"We are excited to support Professor Schulzrinne and his ground-breaking efforts in the rapidly developing technology of VoIP," said Jon A. DeLuca, President & CEO of FiberNet. "Professor Schulzrinne's ensuing results will benefit the VoIP peering industry as a whole," he continued.
FiberNet's VoIP peering service, Phonomenum(TM), is a carrier-class VoIP peering platform that allows carriers, cable operators and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) service providers to establish direct peering connections to exchange VoIP traffic.
Protocols co-developed by Professor Schulzrinne are now Internet standards, used by almost all Internet telephony and multimedia applications. They include the Real-Time Protocol (RTP) for real-time Internet services, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for Internet multimedia signaling and telephony and the stream control protocol for Internet media-on-demand (RTSP).
Professor Schulzrinne also directs the Internet Real-Time Laboratory, which designs, analyzes and prototypes next-generation multimedia networks and develops communications protocols for resource reservation, call setup, media-on-demand, and data transport. His research interests include Internet multimedia systems, quality of service, and performance evaluation. He previously served as a member of the Internet Architecture Board and is a Fellow of the IEEE.
