Railroad Gets State Grant

The area's rail service, not known for its swiftness, could pick up the pace soon.

The state Department of Rail and Public Transportation said

yesterday that it is allocating $504,000 for improvements on several stretches of the Buckingham Branch Railroad, including one in Hanover County.

The short-line railroad's freight yard in Doswell, near Paramount's

Kings Dominion, will be upgraded to replace crossing tracks, according to a news release.

In addition, a siding will be added to provide a place for trains to pass.

The grant, authorized by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, requires Buckingham Branch to provide $216,000 toward the two-year, $720,000 project.

The improvements are expected to allow more freight and Amtrak passenger trains to run through the area and help improve their reliability.

Buckingham Branch also will use the grant to upgrade track in

Augusta, Bath and Rockbridge counties. Buckingham Branch leases all of its lines from CSX Corp.

The work in western Virginia is expected to help freight shipments

and Amtrak's Cardinal service, which runs through the mountainous terrain.

In another matter, the state transportation board approved a

$68,520 grant to provide rail access to a Pitzer Transfer and Storage Corp. in Salem.

The work, expected to be finished within two years, is expected

to improve the transfer of shipments between Pitzer's trucks and Norfolk Southern Corp. freight trains.
