Siemens Receives the Frost & Sullivan Collaborative Solutions Product of the Year Award

Posted on: Thursday, 15 January 2004, 06:00 CST

Frost & Sullivan acknowledged the significance of Siemens' (NYSE:SI) OpenScape software platform with its 2004 Collaborative Solutions Product of the Year Award at last night's Excellence in Information and Communication Technology Awards Banquet.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan honors the company that has provided innovative value-added products that excel in technical efficiency. The product ranks higher than competitive products in its market and demonstrates continued superiority.

Siemens has used our daily information overload to their advantage by introducing OpenScape, a software application that provides consolidated access to multiple communication sources. It provides a single point of access via different user interfaces for many sources such as PCs, cell phones, and palmtops and for applications such as e-mail, instant messaging, electronic documents, and conferencing through personal portals.

The OpenScape software suite version 1.0 leverages Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Office Live Communication Server platform for intelligent, real-time, presence-based access to people, calendars, and files. The system uses a unique communications broker to convert incoming traffic into a suitable format -- for instance, a person accessing a source using a mobile phone will receive information in voice format.

By integrating WebEx meeting or Microsoft Office Live Meeting capabilities, OpenScape offers multi-resource collaboration capabilities, to help simplify the task of setting up multimedia conferencing. It operates in an Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange 2000 environment and uses the security protocols of the operating system.

"The OpenScape solution has created a 'virtual cockpit' that leverages the existing capabilities of in-place systems and resources, adding advanced capabilities, and bringing them together to promote efficiencies in today's collaborative environment," notes Roopam Jain, Frost & Sullivan strategic analyst. "Offering convergence between islands of applications and devices, OpenScape brings comprehensive functionality that stands out in as a unique value proposition."

By working with industry leaders such as Microsoft and WebEx, Siemens is ensuring that OpenScape provides seamless integration with existing communications environments. Plans are underway to get OpenScape to work in non-Microsoft environments in order to offer further integration.

Held in Scottsdale, Ariz., the Frost & Sullivan banquet honored world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in the information and communication technology industry. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of these distinguished individuals and companies.
