Metro Tech Students Await Friday Graduation

Mar. 9--Metro Tech aviation students have spent a rigorous 18 months in preparation for Friday night's graduation and a career as an aviation maintenance technician.

The 65 graduates will have finished 1,980 hours of classroom, lab and hands-on training. A total of 47 different subjects were covered in the program.

They also have passed three Federal Aviation Administration tests in preparation for a career in the aviation industry.

An estimated 600 people are expected to attend the graduation ceremony that will begin at 7 p.m. at the Business Conference Center in the Big Dipper Room, 1900 Springlake, said Pete Lee, director of the program.

An aviation maintenance technician is responsible for the inspection, repair, and maintenance of today's technologically advanced aircraft.

Lee said 95 percent of the program's graduates go to work at Tinker Air Force Base.

There is a year's wait to get into the program, which offers classes in the evening and during the day.

"We are growing and growing," Lee said. "I may have to add another class."

Metro Tech students ranked first in the country in 2004 on the FAA general examination.

The test was given at 181 schools.

Oklahoma students came in third on the FAA airframe test.

"I am really proud of the instructors and students," Lee said. "They really did a good job.

"When they leave here, they are qualified to work anywhere."
