Top state officials yesterday demanded more information from the federal government in the wake of an Associated Press report that Boston is among the seaports where some operations may soon be run by the Arab company Dubai Ports World, based in the United Arab Emirates. Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, asked about the issue by reporters yesterday, said there should be a thorough federal investigation. "We need more information" about port controls and management, she said.
In a statement, Attorney General Thomas Reilly said the $6.8 billion sale of London's Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. to DP World should not be allowed to go through without more information and assurances from Washington. The AP reported on Monday that DP World would operate the Black Falcon cruise terminal in South Boston with the Massachusetts Port Authority, and would run stevedoring operations at the Moran auto terminal in Charlestown if DP World's deal to buy P&O is completed.
"If there is any reason to believe the presence of DP World weakens the security of our port, the people of Boston and Massachusetts need to know about it," Reilly said.
DP World would also assume control over significant operations at six major U.S. ports, and limited operations at more than a dozen others besides Boston.
