DRIVERS are facing delays on a busy road in Staffordshire after a pounds 340,000 improvement scheme swung into action.
Motorists have been promised improved lights and signage on the A449 Stourbridge Road, near Wombourne.
The work began yesterday and the Highways Agency said it would take around eight weeks to complete.
Work on a 2.7 mile section of Stourbridge Road will be done outside rush hour periods and at night to keep
traffic delays to a minimum. "We are adding new signing and improving the road markings and lighting to make this road safer for road users and residents," said project manager Amjid Raza.
"By working overnight and off-peak we aim to keep disruption and inconvenience to a minimum."
Lane closures will be in place during the work with traffic controlled by signal boards and a 30mph temporary restriction will be in force.
The Highways Agency released a list of safety tips for drivers approaching roadworks after five workers were killed and 12 seriously injured last year. The advice urges motorists to:
Drivers should keep within the speed limit.
Get into the correct lane in good time and don't keep switching.
Concentrate on the road ahead and not the roadworks.
Keep a safe distance from traffic in front.
The Highways Agency is an agency of the Department for Transport, which manages, maintains and improves the network of trunk roads and motorways in England.
Traffic information is available on a 24-hour voice activated telephone service, 08700 660 115.
