Mar. 15--TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Co. said Wednesday it has developed a distance-control assist system that helps a driver avoid collision with a vehicle in front.
The system measures the car's distance from a vehicle in front and the speed of both cars, using a radar sensor installed in the front bumper.
If the system determines that braking is required, a warning indicator will appear on the instrument panel and an alarm buzzer will sound to prompt the driver to apply the brakes, it said.
If the driver is still pushing down the gas pedal despite the warning, the pedal will automatically move upward to signal the driver to switch to the brake pedal. If the driver releases the gas pedal, the system will automatically apply the brakes.
Nissan said vehicles with the distance-control assist system will be made available in two to three years.
