Mar. 16--The head academic officer at a South Carolina university will be Glenville State College's next president.

Peter B. Barr will take over the position on July 1. He will replace Robert Freeman, who is retiring this summer.

"I'm just excited," Barr said from his South Carolina home on Wednesday.

"It's not being asked to serve in this capacity, but it is falling in the love with the people that are there," he said.

Barr said he's looking forward to helping create change in the Glenville community, as well as help boost the college's enrollment.

Of three finalists, Barr was the faculty favorite. Eighty-one percent of respondents to a survey selected him.

"I truly feel he is one of those people who can inspire," said Alexis Valliant, an admissions counselor at Glenville.

Barr said he just wants to show students the importance of their educations.

"You don't realize what a great education you have and many times you don't realize that special culture you have [as West Virginians]," he said. "That work ethic that's kind of a part of a West Virginian. I just see this as a wonderful opportunity to try to work and see if we can do some great things," he said.

A first-generation college student and native West Virginian himself, Barr said education is vital to future successes. He wants to make certain students get the chance to come to Glenville, or any college, and understand their roles as citizens.

Barr has been provost and lead academic officer at Coastal Carolina University since 2002. His career at that college has spanned 18 years.

During that time, he worked to create a partnership between a local public school district and students at the college. In the mentoring program, college students worked with at-risk students in the fourth through tenth grades.

Barr said it would be up to faculty and staff to help create similar programs, but he's not discounting them.

Barr received his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from Marshall University. He has a doctoral degree from Louisiana Tech University.

The state Higher Education Policy Commission is expected to approve his hiring by the end of the week, Glenville officials said.
