Winternals to Present Strategies for Defeating Malicious Software Threats
Posted on: Thursday, 16 March 2006, 12:00 CST
Winternals Software(R), a leading provider of systems recovery and protection solutions for the Microsoft enterprise, today announced that the company is presenting "Understanding Malware: Spyware, Viruses, and Rootkits" at the Hilton in Anaheim, CA from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on March 22.
This presentation was originally developed by Mark Russinovich, Ph.D., chief software architect and co-founder of Winternals. Russinovich is one of the industry's foremost Windows security experts and co-author of Windows Internals, Microsoft's official book on the internals of the Windows operating system.
Russinovich was also the first person to uncover the Sony rootkit issue last year, revealing that some Sony audio CDs were automatically installing digital rights management software on personal computers using rootkit cloaking methods. The Sony rootkit discovery will be detailed during the presentation.
The remainder of the presentation will focus on the evolution of malicious software attacks, with details about how malware propagates and embeds into Windows operating systems. Specific solutions for defeating malware will be discussed.
"Corporate IT professionals are challenged by a constant threat of new viruses and worms that can cause lost data, system instability, corruption, and extended downtime," said Edwin Brasch, president and CEO of Winternals. "These IT professionals need to remain current on the most advanced solutions and methods for detecting and removing the harmful software that often penetrates the Windows network."
Collectively, Winternals' solutions -- including Recovery Manager(R), Defrag Manager(R), Administrator's Pak(TM), and the new Protection Manager(TM) -- decrease recovery time, enhance security, and improve performance of all networked systems simultaneously, effectively reducing the total cost of ownership for the Windows-based enterprise.
