Brazil to rebuild 11 major sea ports
RIO DE JANEIRO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Brazil was to rebuild 11 major ports acting as channels for 93 percent of its overseas exports, President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva told reporters on Friday during his visit to a port city.
Lula unveiled the plan at a ceremony inaugurating works aimed at doubling the size of Itajai city's port in Santa Catarina state, which Lula said had not had a major refit since 1950.
He announced that a working group would be set up to study how to rebuild the 11 major ports.
Also on Friday, Lula attended the launch of the first ocean- going fishing boat built by the national fishing fleet renovation program, which plans to send five of its 10 planned new boats to the Santa Catarina state's fishermen.
Ahead of the Itajai visit, Lula stopped off at Sao Francisco do Sul, where work is underway to boost the port's shipping capacity to 8 million tons a year from 6 million tons at present.
The works covering Sao Francisco and Itajai will cost 50 million U.S. dollars in total.
