Broadcom Demonstrates Converged Wireless Products At 3GSM World Congress

Posted on: Friday, 20 February 2004, 06:00 CST

CANNES, France, 3GSM World Congress, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation , a leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, will be demonstrating its broad portfolio of chips, software and systems for wireless communications at the 3GSM tradeshow. With a combination of market and technology leadership in all segments of the wireless industry, Broadcom is enabling unique combinations of wireless functionality in devices as diverse as notebook computers, mobile phones, printers and MP3 players. The Broadcom(R) demonstrations will run at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France from February 23-26, 2004.

Wireless communications are a natural extension of broadband connectivity in the home and office, adding the convenience of mobility to the powerful utility provided by high-speed data networks. Broadcom began establishing itself as a leader in the wireless industry by introducing the first single- chip Bluetooth(R) transceiver, and has strengthened its position with a string of industry technical "firsts." These innovations have translated into adoption of Broadcom technology in wireless LAN, EDGE/GSM cellular and Bluetooth products from top-tier manufacturers worldwide.

"Broadcom has solidified its position as a leader in the wireless communications industry, offering market-leading solutions for wireless LAN, and a fast growing footprint in the markets for Bluetooth and EDGE cellular products," said Bob Rango, Vice President of Broadcom's Mobile &Wireless Group. "By offering products supporting wireless WAN, LAN, PAN and VoIP, Broadcom is uniquely positioned to offer integrated wireless platforms that minimize radio interference and work together to provide the best possible wireless end-user experience."

Broadcom's ability to integrate digital, mixed signal, and CMOS RF leads to wireless solutions that offer reduced cost and size, and enables the convergence of multiple wireless technologies into next generation mobile communication platforms. Integration of several components into single-chip solutions by Broadcom has enabled OEMs to offer devices that include multiple communications technologies. Single-chip mobility solutions from Broadcom include the BCM2132 EDGE baseband processor; the AirForce One(TM) BCM4317 802.11b transceiver; the Blutonium(R) BCM2035 and BCM2040 Bluetooth transceivers; and the BCM1101 VoIP processor.

These highly integrated solutions, combined with software and hardware technologies designed to allow collaborative coexistence among them, will enable the next generation of converged wireless devices, including multi-mode mini PCI networking cards and wireless VoIP phone handsets. Broadcom is currently working with OEMs to develop these products. Sony Ericsson has already announced a combination Wi-Fi/GPRS PC card based on Broadcom technology, which has been available since November 2003.

Broadcom's Mobile Solutions at 3GSM World Congress

At the 3GSM tradeshow Broadcom will be demonstrating its wireless technologies, highlighting platforms that feature new chips and multiple wireless technologies. Addressing the cellular market, Broadcom will demonstrate the first combination WCDMA/EDGE/GPRS PC card, featuring Class 10 EDGE and WCDMA functionality on a single chip. Major mobile infrastructure providers including Ericsson, Siemens and Nortel will be showcasing EDGE products based on Broadcom technology at 3GSM World Congress, using the 1800Mhz band.

Extending the wide area capabilities into the personal area networking space, Broadcom will also show a platform demonstrating seamless hardware and software integration of Bluetooth with the BCM2132 EDGE processor. Combining the AirForce One BCM4317 single-chip wireless LAN with packet-based voice technologies yields a two-chip solution for a VoWLAN phone handset, also being shown at 3GSM.

Another demonstration will highlight InConcert(TM) technology, which enables Broadcom's Blutonium products and its AirForce(TM) family of 802.11b/g products to both transmit in the 2.4GHz radio frequency range without causing each other interference. InConcert is a hardware and software solution that allows Bluetooth and wireless LAN products to synchronize their transmissions, enabling a superior wireless experience for end users.

Arrangements to view Broadcom's complete portfolio of mobile solutions that integrate Bluetooth, cellular, wireless LAN and IP telephony can be made at the Broadcom Mabruk II yacht located just steps from the expo center in the Porte de Cannes at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes from February 23-26, 2004.
