Mar. 21--Monongalia County students in grades 3-8 tested their abilities at the Monongalia County Academic Games last week. The event tests problem-solving and critical thinking skills through games created by Robert Allen and Layman Allen in the 1970's. They consist of a math game, "Equations;" a language arts game, "Linguishtik;" and a social studies game, "Mr. President." The games are not only academically challenging, but also foster problem solving, critical-thinking skills and a sense of competitive fun, said Laura Cohen, Academic Games coordinator. Indications are that these games have strengthened standardized test scores across the curriculum, she added. Top overall scorers are: Third Grade : Nicky Bierer and Zach Kilwein, both Mountainview Elementary; Stephen Chen, Cheat Lake Elementary; and Alice Shi, Woodburn Elementary. Fourth Grade : Mark Hileman and Cody Hinkle, Lauren Peace and Kasey Turner, all Cheat Lake Elementary. Fifth Grade : Demi Fang and Katie Reynolds, both North Elementary; Katherine Nowak, Cheat Lake Middle; and Alex Rubenstein, Mountainview Elementary. Sixth Grade : Samet Demircan, Suncrest Middle; and Tim Kingsbury, Mary Lemine and Jessica Seese, all Cheat Lake Middle. Seventh Grade : Caitlin Parrucci, Allissa Sun and Sara Harper, all Suncrest Middle; Sean Coffers, South Middle and Kelsey McClung, Westwood Middle. Eighth Grade : Cody DeBastiani, Jarrett Hoffman, Colin Kemp, Lisa Liang, Chelsea Malone and Kim Savarino, all Suncrest Middle. Elementary schools participating were North, Cheat Lake, Mountainview, Woodburn, Ridgedale, Arnettsville, Riverside, Brookhaven and Morgantown Learning Academy. Secondary schools participating were Cheat Lake Middle, South Middle, Suncrest Middle, Westwood Middle and Morgantown Learning Academy.
