Mar. 21--NORFOLK -- City schools employees got a lesson in e-mail politics Friday.
Laia Davidson, a teacher at Poplar Halls Elementary, sent a systemwide note announcing that her husband, Todd C. Davidson, is a candidate for the Virginia Beach School Board.
Several people replied back to the list to call the message "inappropriate" or to ask to be removed from further political mailings.
School division spokesman Vincent Rhodes said the mailing violated School Board policy.
He e-mailed Laia Davidson and school administrators Monday reminding them of the rule, which prohibits the distribution of materials promoting a candidate.
Todd Davidson defended the e-mail, citing his close family connections to Norfolk schools. Davidson, a Baptist pastor, used to teach in Norfolk schools, as did his parents. His sister still does, he said.
"Norfolk Public Schools is like a family," he said.
He said he has received many positive responses to the mailing and denied it broke any rules.
Laia Davidson declined to comment on the e-mail, which announced a meet-and-greet session with her husband next week and provided contact information. Her husband is one of four candidates running for two at-large seats in Virginia Beach.
