Sun Helps Fuel Developer Innovation Through New Services Offering and Updates to Sun Developer Network Program

Posted on: Tuesday, 21 March 2006, 12:00 CST

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. the creator and leading advocate of Java(TM) technology, today announced two new developer programs as part of the Sun(SM) Developer Network Program (SDN) (http://developers.sun.com/). Sun(SM) Developer Expert Assistance Service is offered in conjunction with Sun Services and provides e- mail-based technical assistance for individual developers anywhere in the world. The Sun(SM) Community Champions Program is a new developer recognition program.

Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service (http://developers.sun.com/developer_help) is the first offering from Sun to provide individual developers with specialized advice for programming issues on a per-request basis with guaranteed response times, which can help shorten their development and deployment cycles. The service is available to all developers with a cost of $99 (USD) per request. Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service provides global, round-the-clock e-mail-based support on Sun software including: NetBeans(TM), Sun Java(TM) Studio Creator, Sun Java Studio Enterprise, Sun Studio 11 and Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE).

This new program complements the more than 200 developer discussion forums available through the SDN community by empowering developers to choose the resource that best meets their needs. Developers can either submit inquiries to one of the forum discussions and receive community support or they can contact the Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service and get quick turnaround from dedicated Sun engineers.

"OmegaCube has been looking at a Java technology/Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System approach to make our product PowerERP available under Sun platforms. We were facing development challenges when using Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) and required some help to meet our tight development deadline. The Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service team responded with the solution very quickly and we completed our development module on schedule. The Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service is a good program and I will definitely recommend it to others," said Alok Aggawal, CEO OmegaCube Technologies, Inc.

Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service is also a key feature of the recently announced Sun(SM)Developer Service Plans (http://www.sun.com/developerserviceplans), a comprehensive packaged service offering that combines programming advice, training credits, and product support to reduce time and risk for the entire application lifecycle, from development through deployment. With the addition of Sun Developer Expert Assistance Service, Sun's portfolio of Developer Services expands to include a broader range of help resources including: expert assistance, product support, training, and certification, to connect both individual and corporate developers with the right resources whenever they need them. http://developers.sun.com/services is the new comprehensive location for developers to discover all the support and services options available to them.

The Sun Community Champions Program helps members of the SDN community to promote their experiences with Sun technologies and tools. Participants in this program have a chance to be recognized for their achievements by their peers and by Sun. In addition to a biography and background information written on the Sun Community Champions, members will get the chance to share their strategies, challenges, and solutions with their community peers through a written column. Sun Community Champions are also eligible for other opportunities such as speaking events like the Tech Days conferences. More information on the Sun Community Champions Program is available at: http://developers.sun.com/champions/.

"Sun is committed to providing developers with an interactive community around Sun tools and technology. We have implemented these new programs as a direct result of input from SDN members and other developers. More than ever before, Sun is listening to feedback from developers in the community and responding to their requests," said Jean Elliott, director of developer marketing at Sun. "We look forward to receiving more feedback, expanding the SDN program with new tools and features and continuing to evolve our Developer Services to meet the needs of the developer community."

With over 1.7 million registered developers, SDN is the premier source for technical information, training and tools for developers working with Sun technology. Evans Data Corporation recently recognized the SDN site as the "Best Website to Learn about Java" according to a survey of over 400 developers conducted as part of the 2006 Evans Data Corporation Developer Marketing Patterns Annual Report.
