Mar. 20--Union Pacific Corp. plans to hire 200 people to staff its Los Angeles Basin rail yards including its West Colton switching yard.
Union Pacific plans to hire train service personnel, diesel mechanics and technicians. The jobs will pay $35,000 to $75,000 a year.
A breakdown of the jobs by location was not available.
Union Pacific in Colton handles 85 trains a day and employs 1,236 people.
The railroad will hire more than 2,000 people a year to replace retiring workers, spokesman Mark Davis said. "We're going to see nearly 40 percent of our work force reach retirement age in the next five years, so we will continue to aggressively hire new employees."
Riverside Community College expects more than 3,000 people to attend a job fair it will host for the railroad March 24-25.
Riverside Community College hopes to become a training center for Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., said Richard Barron, associate dean of innovative programs. "They will replace about 50 percent of their work force because of retirement and attrition. We want to be the institution that establishes a pool of applicants for them."
Meanwhile, Union Pacific started a $21.3 million, three-month track renewal project in Riverside, Ontario, Pomona, Walnut and City of Industry Feb. 2.
The railroad will enhance 43.3 miles of rail between East Los Angeles and Riverside. Union Pacific will replace 110,000 wooden ties with concrete ties.
