Vietnam plans bigger river-way transport capacity by 2010

HANOI, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam has aimed to raise its inland waterway transport capacity to 83 million tons of cargoes and 253.5 million passengers in 2010, a local transport agency said Tuesday.

Under a development plan approved by the Transport Ministry in mid-March, the country's river-way ship fleet will be able to handle 165 million tons of cargoes and 438 million passengers in 2020, said the ministry's Inland Waterway Administration.

To realize the target, Vietnam will equitize a large number of state-owned waterway transport enterprises, and call for stronger domestic and foreign investment in the sector, especially in building new high-speed ships and river ports. It will also appeal for bigger official development assistance to upgrade major waterway routes, especially those in the northern and southern regions, the administration said.

Vietnam's inland waterway transport sector served over 69.9 million tons of cargoes and 169.3 million passengers last year, up 6.4 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, against the year earlier.

By early 2004, the country, home to over 2,360 rivers and canals, had nearly 76,000 cargo ships and over 10,100 passenger ships on inland waterway routes, the administration said.
