Mar. 21--CA Inc., formerly Computer Associates International, is planning during the next two years to more than double the staff at its technology center in Hyderabad, India, to top 2,500 -- more than the number now working at its Islandia headquarters -- according to a report yesterday in an Indian business publication.
CA wouldn't confirm or deny the numbers.
The Business Standard attributed its report to Pravir Arora, a CA marketing official in India. The article quoted him as saying that staffing at the center would surpass the Long Island total within two years, a number he gave as 2,500.
Software giant CA, Long Island's fourth-largest publicly traded company in revenue, said in a statement, "We are building our research and development capacity in India as we are building our business in Islandia."
CA says it has 2,225 employees on Long Island, a number virtually unchanged at least since last June. The local workers are among almost 16,000 worldwide, compared with 15,300 reported by CA last June.
A CA official who declined to be quoted by name told Newsday in September 2004 that CA had accelerated the hiring of engineers at the software-development center in Hyderabad, which opened in 2003, from 400 engineers to between 800 and 1,000 by the end of 2004.
However, CA chief executive John Swainson indicated in an interview with Newsday in November 2004 that moves to quickly build the staff in Hyderabad were under review. "We've kind of frozen it at this point to make sure how well it's working," he said.
But Swainson last year suggested the freeze was thawing.
In April he said he had "concluded India does play a role," and added, "We'll be cautiously expanding that role over the next year or so."
In January, CA said its fiscal third-quarter earnings nearly doubled to $59 million from the same quarter a year earlier.
Its shares closed yesterday at $27.74, up 8 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange.
