Altiris Releases Software Virtualization Solution(TM); SVS Free for Personal Use License Now Available

Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of service-oriented management software, today announced the revolutionary software management capabilities of Altiris(R) Software Virtualization Solution(TM) are now available. To demonstrate the power and elegant simplicity of SVS, Altiris has also made a free for personal use only license available for download from www.tucows.com and www.download.com.

SVS helps to reduce support costs and streamline software operations by providing faster, simpler and more manageable deployment of desktop applications. SVS helps eliminate application conflicts and delivers instant application activation, deactivation and reset capabilities.

Unlike existing system virtualization products, SVS abstracts the installation of an application's files and registry settings to allow the application to be installed and used without altering the base Windows operating system or conflicting with other applications. The solution also enables same-system, conflict-free hosting of multiple versions of the same application.

Mercy Medical Center, a 130-year old, Baltimore-based health care facility and teaching hospital with university affiliation, manages thousands of IT assets using Altiris solutions. Matthew Giblin, Mercy Health Services senior desktop engineer said, "We manage more than 200 applications in our environment. As is typical, all these applications don't necessarily work or play nicely together on Windows 2000 or XP. Altiris Software Virtualization Solution allows us to eliminate these conflicts while being able to provide our users with on-demand application provisioning. SVS is patents-pending technology that can be centrally managed using the Altiris architecture to help customers benefit from integrated Altiris service-oriented management solutions including inventory, packaging, deployment and delivery. However, SVS does not require the Altiris management console and is built with a flexible architecture to work with other desktop management tools such as Microsoft Systems Management Server. Altiris will soon provide a free SMS console snap-in for SVS administration.

SVS places applications and data into units that can be instantly managed based on business requirements. SVS only affects how application files and registry settings are installed and not how they are consumed or run, preserving normal application supportability, functionality and behavior. Virtualizing an application with SVS does not require application customization, an application server or specialized training.

Features added to SVS during a comprehensive beta cycle include:
