Local Artists Explore Idea of Community Art

Posted on: Thursday, 23 March 2006, 09:01 CST

Mar. 23--For one day only, four Morgantown artists will be exploring the idea of art as a community endeavor with an interactive installation at the Blue Moose Cafe. The installation will be on view from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday.

Collaborators Magdalena Torres Villarreal, a WVU graduate art student; Michelle Walkey, WVU graduate art student; Glynis Board; and Paul Valette, musician and sound engineer, have teamed up their efforts to make this show -- which will feature fresh grass, grown at the WVU Greenhouse, placed around the upper section of the coffee shop. "We're using the Blue Moose because it's a well-known community space," explained Board. "As to the purpose of the show, it's more about creating a situation where the community is a player in making 'art.' We're trying not to preimpose any meaning or value on the grass itself, but we're putting meaning and value on the processes of the interaction with the grass. We will place paper beneath the grass so that we can collect and register physical imprints left behind from the event." Visitors to the Blue Moose Friday are encouraged to touch the grass, she said.
