SurfControl Tracking Internet Threat Targeting 2006 FIFA World Cup Enthusiasts

Posted on: Friday, 24 March 2006, 21:00 CST

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., March 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SurfControl , the world leader in Internet content protection, is tracking and providing customer protection against a phishing and spyware incident targeting 2006 FIFA World Cup enthusiasts. Fraudulent emails claiming to be from MasterCard are offering free travel and tickets to the World Cup in Germany. The user is encouraged to click a link to claim the prize. Selecting the link results in a keylogger downloading to the user's desktop. Thereafter, when the user accesses any variety of legitimate online banking sites, the keylogger mimics the Web site, captures the personal banking information of the user and transfers it to an alternative destination. Currently this activity has targeted the following bank sites: bradesco.com.br, itau.com.br, unibanco.com.br, bancoreal.com.br, caixa.gov.br and caixa.com.br. SurfControl continues to monitor its probe mailboxes in the event that a new phishing scam is detected.

SurfControl has added signatures for the emails, Web sites and keyloggers to its threat databases, providing content protection for both in-bound and outbound data transmission.
