Fire on Interstate 205 Caused By Gas Spill Backs Up Traffic for Hours

Mar. 25–MOUNTAIN HOUSE – A gasoline spill on westbound Interstate 205 caused a fire Friday night that backed up traffic for hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A gas tanker was driving near Grant Line Road around 7 p.m. when it overturned, spilling gas onto the roadway, said Oakland CHP Officer Gabriel Potter. Cars drove through the smoke until traffic was diverted to Grant Line Road, Potter said.

No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported, according to CHP officials. The fire spread to grass and other vegetation bordering the freeway and hadn’t been contained two hours after the accident.

The California Department of Transportation posted signs on nearby Interstate 5 warning drivers about delays while crews fought the fire. The Stockton Fire Department also responded to help fight the blaze.
