Fujitsu, Media EXchange, Tokyo Electron, and Procket Networks Collaborate To Build the Highest Performance Internet Backbone in the World

Posted on: Friday, 20 February 2004, 06:00 CST

MILPITAS, Calif. and TOKYO, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Procket Networks Inc., a leading provider of high-performance Internet Protocol (IP) technology and products, today announced that along with Fujitsu Ltd., Media EXchange Inc. and Tokyo Electron Ltd., it has begun collaborating on the technical integration necessary to build the highest performance Internet backbone in the world in Tokyo.

These industry leaders have come together to address the growing burden on Japan's Internet backbone as a result of the high rate of adoption of broadband to the home using access methods like ADSL and FTTH. This, along with the large volume of streaming media applications and an increasing level of dependency on the Internet by people for communication and eCommerce, requires higher levels of reliability and performance.

"In this environment, the same demands for high speed and high reliability are made with respect to the Internet backbone. In order to attain these objectives, both in terms of performance and high-availability, we've found existing methods and equipment are inadequate," said Yoshiki Ishida, Ph.D., chief technology officer of Media EXchange. "Securing a high-volume transmission media to build a high-speed, high-reliability Internet backbone is not sufficient, it is also necessary to build a stable network with low latency. Solving this is the objective of this collaboration."

The companies are collaborating to build a network configuration with equipment and functions focused on:

-- Increasing the speed of aggregation in circuit switching

-- Minimizing the effects in the event of a failure in a portion of the

routing functions

In this collaboration, the world's highest performance 40 Gigabit router (the Procket Networks' PRO/8801(TM) product) and Fujitsu's Next Generation Switch will be introduced to Media EXchange's network environment. In addition to commencing test operations, the participants will conduct technical verifications including the operation of the Procket Networks router with edge routers for peering with other Japan carriers.

"Procket is pleased to be part of this project with Fujitsu and TEL and to be part of the Media EXchange network. Japan is one of the most advanced Internet countries in the world, not just in terms of users, but in terms of massive multimedia usage. This type of environment where concurrent applications requiring simultaneous Quality of Service, Multicast, and IPv6 to support new services is well suited for the PRO/8000 series," said Roland Acra, president and CEO of Procket Networks.
