Mar. 28--PG&E is offering $1.7 million in grants to public schools in the company's third annual Solar Schools program.
Available to schools within Northern and Central California, the Pacific Gas & Electric grants are awarded to schools that expand and promote learning around solar power.
Funds will assist public schools that serve low-income students and communities of color with solar energy systems, specialized solar science curricula, training for teachers and cash grants for innovative science projects.
The application period is now open to eligible schools within PG&E's service areas. Up to 30 schools will receive a $20,000 donation of a solar photovoltaic system for the school's education use and free installation of the system, which converts sunlight into electric power.
More than 600 teachers will be selected to attend science curriculum training seminars and receive specialized classroom material, and up to $200,000 in cash grants in amounts of $2,500 or $5,000 will be awarded to schools for their innovative solar science projects.
The National Energy Education Development Project manages curriculum training and the Foundation for Environmental Education coordinates installation of the photovoltaic systems.
Last year, the company awarded more than $1 million to fund the installation of photovoltaic systems at 20 public schools; 25 science projects; and curriculum training for more than 400 teachers.
