Japan Service Providers Shift to 40 Mbps ADSL and VDSL Equipment According to Dell'Oro Group 4Q03 Access Report

ADSL Equipment shipments to Japan declined overall after a massive spike in 3Q03. During the quarter, Service Providers were engaged in installing 40 Mbps ADSL equipment they had purchased in 3Q03. However, this did not slow sales of VDSL equipment, which were particularly strong for NEC and Sumitomo. As the world closely follows Japan's activities, North American and European Operators are concentrating on expanding their broadband services suite. ¶"During the next few quarters it will be very interesting to see how the subscriber base is split between those seeking lowest-price data access, and those willing to pay more for convenience and time savings," said Tam Dell'Oro, Founder of Dell'Oro Group. "We have interviewed a number of operators, and see both Bell Canada and France Telecom doing an excellent job offering television services. Also, Bell South and Time Warner have a clever suite of new services which give the customer more control over what they pay for. All of these activities will spur the migration to broadband and propel equipment sales through 2004."
