Mindspeed's Miro(TM) Voice Processor Enables LG Electronics to Deploy Carrier-Class CDMA2000 Wireless Base Station Controller

Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced that LG Electronics Ltd. has chosen Mindspeed's Miro communications convergence processor for use in its STAREX-IS CDMA2000 wireless base station controller.

LG Electronics has a long history of supplying high-performance telecommunications infrastructure equipment for both wireline and wireless networks worldwide. The STAREX-IS base station controller is designed to handle up to 4000 channels of wireless voice incorporating Mindspeed's patented selectable-mode vocoder (SMV) technology for improved voice quality and bandwidth efficiency.

"Mindspeed's high-performance Miro voice processor and carrier- class software enabled us to design a robust, compact system for rapidly growing CDMA2000 wireless networks worldwide," said J.P. Hong, senior research manager of the CDMA Network Division at LG Electronics. "Mindspeed's SMV voice-coding technology provides the carrier-class voice quality required in CDMA2000 networks, and dramatic bandwidth savings compared to other voice-coding technologies."

Mindspeed's SMV technology was selected by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) in 2001 as a standard for use in CDMA2000 networks.

"We are proud that LG Electronics is one of the first major equipment suppliers to begin shipping wireless systems based on our Miro voice processor and SMV voice-coding technology," said Michael Metzger, director of marketing for Mindspeed. "LG Electronics' STAREX-IS platform demonstrates Mindspeed's expanding presence in the wireless infrastructure market."

The Miro M82610 combines high-performance DSP cores and a packet processing engine with industry-standard streaming packet interfaces to provide a high-density voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and voice-over-ATM system-on-a-chip.
