Apr. 3--Indianapolis -- Marquette Golden Eagles assistant coach Jean Prioleau is leaving the program to accept a similar job at Iowa State.
Prioleau, who was hired at MU late last May after a five-year stint at Wichita State, will join coach Greg McDermott, who moved from Northern Iowa to Iowa State last month.
"It was a tough one," Prioleau said about his decision Sunday. "I had a great experience. The Big East is great. Coach (Tom) Crean's great, and I learned a lot from him in one year. I'll miss the guys, I'll miss the city and I'll miss the people associated with the program."
Crean said he understood Prioleau's career aspirations.
"Any time an assistant coach goes you want it to be a situation where it helps their career," Crean said. "He decided that this would be a better opportunity for him to follow his goals and he goes with somebody he knows and has familiarity with. I wish him the best."
Prioleau, a New Jersey native, had been rumored to be a target of new Rutgers coach Fred Hill. But he decided to go with McDermott, with whom he has a previous relationship from their days in the Missouri Valley Conference.
"I know him, I coached against him for five years, kind of know his style of play," said Prioleau, who begins his new job Tuesday.
Prioleau's resignation marks the second time in three years an assistant has left MU after one season.
"I think finding the right fits, finding people that share your passion for what has to happen, that's the key in anything," Crean said. "You're always on a quest to make sure that you have that."
Crean added that he would move quickly to fill the spot vacated Prioleau.
"Our situation will be handled very, very soon," he said. "It's just a matter of some formalities but right now I know exactly what I want to do."
Crean honored: Crean was one of 59 Final Four coaches to take part in an inaugural banquet sponsored the National Association of Basketball Coaches and ESPNU on Sunday night.
The menu was chosen North Carolina's Roy Williams, coach of the defending national champion Tar Heels, and each coach was presented with a jacket.
Both are nods to yearly traditions started at the Masters golf tournament.
"Every year there'll be three new people because (Florida's) Billy Donovan has already been in (the Final Four)," Crean said. "I'm absolutely honored to be a part of it. But it's probably nothing like being good enough to pick the menu."
