Digi-Data and FalconStor Introduce Consolidated VTL; Virtual Tape Library Simplifies Consolidation of Secondary Storage

Digi-Data Corporation, a leading manufacturer of high performance disk storage systems, and FalconStor(R) Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), a leading developer of network storage software, announce the Consolidated VTL (virtual tape library), powered by FalconStor(R). Integrated into a 25u rack, all components for virtual tape and SATA disk connectivity are packaged into a pre-configured, tested solution. Sharing capacity and controller bandwidth between the virtual tape library application and other secondary storage applications is easily addressed with Digi-Data's clustered storage architecture -- STORM -- STorage On Redundant Modules.
"Digi-Data's strategy to pre-integrate and tune this appliance helps to accelerate installations and eliminate any chance of a faulty cable or incorrect setting," says Don Mead, vice president of marketing for FalconStor. "The clustered storage systems are ideally suited for this type of multi-application usage, as controllers or capacity modules can be added as needed."
The solution offers the ability to dynamically partition storage pools between the virtual tape library component, or any number of secondary applications. With this level of low-cost capacity, customers won't have to juggle partial-full backups to disk. The additional capacity also facilitates using SATA disk as the first layer in an archive strategy, with WORM tape or optical storage in the background.
"The reality of the situation is that our customers don't want to spend any more time or money than they have to on backup solutions," says Dennis Cindrich, president and CEO of Digi-Data. "But until backup is managed properly, they usually don't have the resources to fully engage in meaningful IT optimization projects. This solution handles the backup challenges and offers a high availability platform to consolidate other secondary storage requirements they may have."
Consolidated VTL
The Consolidated VTL quickly and easily condenses secondary storage farms by offering utility disk and backup acceleration through the VTL attachment. Supporting fibre channel (FC) drives and SATA technology also positions this solution as a solid target for customers needing disk-to-disk backup using the native backup software -- running backup data into standard file systems.
"It's a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde system," says Brad Westcott, director of North American solutions for Digi-Data. "By day, it's a workhorse utility disk system -- by night, it's a powerful backup solution. As data grows on either side, our clustered RAID controllers offer the customer a building block approach to snap-in performance as needed."
Initial shipments of the Consolidated VTL solution include one controller, with a measured throughput of 350 MB/s. However, the patented clustered storage architecture allows the C-VTL to scale up to 1,400 MB/s (2-5 TB per hour) with over 400TB of storage in a single system. Massive bandwidth is achieved by having each controller manage an independent workload, with a patented failover system to assure high availability without host software agents.
The Consolidated VTL solution is available now. A common configuration includes software, 25TB of storage, dual controllers, connectivity products and a 25u rack for a list price of $130,000.
