IPv6 Features Extend LVL7 Networking Software Portfolio for Next-Generation Enterprise Switches

Posted on: Tuesday, 4 April 2006, 09:00 CDT

LVL7 Systems, Inc., the leading provider of production-ready networking software, has announced the general-availability of FASTPATH(R) 4.4 software. The latest software edition adds IPv6 support and other feature enhancements to the FASTPATH product portfolio, giving original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) another critical component necessary for developing next-generation Ethernet systems.

Across the industry, manufacturers and enterprise users alike are preparing for the transition to IPv6 networks and the advantages they offer. The new FASTPATH IPv6 package takes those plans and preparations one step closer to being a production-ready reality. Provisions for dual IPv4/IPv6 TCP/IP stacks, OSPFv3, IPv6 addressing and MIBs, and similar RFC and protocol standards are part of the FASTPATH package.

In addition, LVL7 has incorporated numerous improvements across the existing Switching, Quality of Service, Management and other FASTPATH portfolio modules. Examples of new software features include, among others: MAC-based and IP subnet-based VLANs, 802.1AB Link Layer Discovery Protocol, and denial-of-service attack suppression at the port level.

FASTPATH 4.4 also includes powerful route scalability improvements that enable Layer 3 switching with market-leading performance. In combination with Broadcom(R) StrataXGS(R) III switching silicon, FASTPATH 4.4 software can deliver up to three times the route-scaling performance of a Cisco 3750 switch for OSPFv2 and OSPFv3.

With the combination of new IPv6 features and enhanced Layer 2 capabilities, OEMs are able to quickly raise the technical sophistication of their Ethernet products to an advanced level of enterprise-class performance.

"Enterasys Networks has built a solid partnership with LVL7 and uses FASTPATH technology to complement our in-house Engineering development resources to deliver the high performance, security enabled SecureStack family of stackable edge switches," said Dave Dubois, vice president of product management for Enterasys. "The availability of an IPv6 module, along with the performance and feature enhancements to FASTPATH's switching and routing capabilities, are welcome additions to our development process and program."

The new IPv6 package joins a growing list of FASTPATH software offerings that represent a flexible, high-performance toolkit for jumpstarting the entire product development process and building a variety of innovative Ethernet systems in fixed and stackable configurations.

"Helping valued customers like Enterasys drive market share gains is LVL7's primary mission, and FASTPATH 4.4 software can enable this transition," said Dave King, LVL7's vice president of marketing and strategy, "From a pure performance standpoint, our latest release sets a new benchmark for third-party networking software. And OEM's planning to deliver IPv6-ready switches can take advantage of LVL7's production-ready business model to accelerate product time-to-market while dramatically reducing costs."

FASTPATH 4.4 software is available immediately. The current portfolio of FASTPATH software packages for building fixed and stackable Ethernet systems includes: Switching; Routing; IPv6; WLAN Switching; Management; Quality of Service; BGP-4; Multicast; and WLAN Access Point software.
