NEC Electronics America Showcases PCI Express to PCI-X Solutions at Intel Developer Forum

Posted on: Wednesday, 18 February 2004, 06:00 CST

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NEC Electronics America, Inc. today announced the company will demonstrate working silicon PCI Express(TM) switch and bridge chip solutions in the NEC Electronics America booth (#530) at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) Spring 2004, February 17-20 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.

The system-level demonstrations showcase both PCI Express data transfer with an NEC Electronics switch ASSP and a PCI Express to PCI-X(TM) bridge for LAN communication. Both are operated and demonstrated on a platform with PCI Express ports. The NEC Electronics bridge chip, uPD720400, supports one x8 PCI Express upstream lane and two PCI-X and PCI downstream domains. The switch chip, uPD720401, has two PCI Express x8 lanes, which can be used as either an upstream or downstream port, and four x4 downstream PCI Express ports. These products were announced in September 2003 at IDF Fall and are scheduled to be in mass production in Q3 2004.

"As a leading developer of PCI Express solutions, NEC Electronics America understands the importance of reliable, high-speed interface technology for server, storage, PC and other network-related applications," said Hiroshi Nakashiba, vice president and general manager, broadband LSI business unit, NEC Electronics America. "We are seeing PCI Express moving to displace traditional PCI technology, and with our proven experience and expertise with this technology, we are developing more PCI Express ASSPs to provide customers with high-speed interface solutions optimized to fit their development needs."

NEC Electronics' PCI Express ASSPs

PCI Express is a third-generation, scalable I/O (input/output) architecture for use in desktop, mobile, server, communications platform, workstation and embedded devices. As PC and server CPUs and other I/O devices increase in speed, technologies like PCI Express are needed to ensure that I/O interfaces will not create performance bottlenecks in systems. NEC Electronics' PCI Express ASSP offerings include switch and bridge chips, which are compliant with revision 1.0a of the PCI Express base specification. The NEC Electronics PCI Express switch ASSP provides fan-outs for designers to utilize more PCI Express ports, and its PCI Express to PCI-X bridge ASSP will allow customers to use the PCI Express and PCI-X or PCI(TM) standards in new product designs.
