Apr. 5--TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. announced Wednesday it will build a new flash memory chip plant on the premises of its existing flash memory chip factory in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.
Toshiba will start the construction of the NAND-type flash memory chip plant in August and expects to start operations the fourth quarter of 2007. The plant will be the fourth of its kind to be built on the premises.
The company did not reveal the cost of the project but it is likely to come to around 600 billion yen, according to industry sources.
The NAND-type flash memory chip is suited for high-capacity data storage devices such as portable digital music players and mobile phones.
Toshiba said it will seek the financial cooperation of U.S.flash memory chip maker SanDisk Corp., with which the Japanese company has formed a business alliance.
Toshiba projected the scale for the monthly output of flash memory chips at the new Yokkaichi factory to be the same as the third plant there and will reach the equivalent of 100,000 30-centimeter silicon wafers when the envisioned new plant starts operations at its full capacity, it said.
Toshiba wants to bolster its share in the growing global NAND flash memory market. Toshiba, together with SanDisk, holds the second largest share in the global market for NAND-type flash memory chip shipment, following South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.
