Olympus Establishes Optical Foundry Services; Combined with Olympus' MEMS Foundry Services Offers Complete MEMS Module Solution
Posted on: Monday, 23 February 2004, 06:00 CST
Olympus Partnership Development Group (PDG) announces the establishment by Olympus of its Optical Foundry Services. The Optical Foundry will include Olympus' aspherical lens research, development and products and additional products especially for the Optical Fiber Communication field. In addition, the Optical Foundry will complement Olympus' existing MEMS Foundry by offering world-renowned OEM optics, optical design, prototyping, manufacturing, integration and testing for MEMS-based modules. The result will be the world's first MEMS, electronics and optical foundry service that offers OEM customers a complete MEMS-based solution from concept to finished and tested MEMS modules. ¶ Companies will now have the option of outsourcing to one or both foundries in designing, developing, and manufacturing their MEMS-based module. The MEMS foundry can deliver the MEMS subassembly by designing and building the MEMS device and also integrating the drive electronics using flipchip, wire bonding and wafer bonding processes. The Optical Foundry can then design an optimized optical system to integrate with the MEMS subassembly. In the past, companies in optical communications and other industries had to do the hard work of selecting and managing separate MEMS, optics and contract manufacturing vendors. By combining the expertise of Olympus' two functions under one umbrella, customers can achieve a single solution that optimizes the performance of both MEMS and optics parts of the module, lowers the cost and attains faster turn-around. In addition, it greatly simplifies the supply chain for the customer, improves quality and yield, and forms a more cohesive relationship between the two companies. ¶"We are very excited about adding Optical Foundry Services to our customer offerings," said Olympus PDG vice president Lawrence Wang. "Our customers get world class MEMS design, prototyping and manufacturing, but they also get Olympus' world renowned optics quality with skilled lens designers and manufacturing people to ensure they get the complete module they've envisioned. It's part of Olympus' theme of 'Your Vision, Our Future.' We hope to encourage more fabless MEMS companies and established system companies to partner with Olympus in turning their MEMS-based product dreams into reality."
