Pirelli to Offer Fiber Optic Communications Cable Solutions with New Corning(R) NexCor(TM) Fiber with MaxPower(TM) Technology

Posted on: Wednesday, 25 February 2004, 06:00 CST

LEXINGTON, S.C., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Pirelli Cables and Systems North American announced today that its fiber optic communications cable solutions will be available with the new Corning(R) NexCor(TM) fiber with MaxPower(TM) technology introduced on Tuesday by Corning Incorporated.

Corning NexCor fiber is a state-of-the-art, single-mode fiber that enables twice the launch power compared with other standard single-mode fibers. This increased power-handling capability is designed into the optical fiber itself through Corning's MaxPower technology, which increases the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold of the fiber by 3 dB compared with other standard single-mode fibers.

"Pirelli's customers continue to benefit from the technology leadership our partnership with Corning provides," Brian DiLascia, vice president and general manager of Pirelli Communications Cables and Systems North America, said. "We are excited about the innovative solutions this new technology will enable us to offer, not only for current customer network requirements but also for requirements well into the future."

Corning NexCor fiber allows network operators to exploit today's cost- effective analog video technology while deploying an efficient outside plant for future digital migration, making it the ideal fiber for converged services (voice, video and data) networks, such as fiber to the x (FTTx) and cable TV networks.

Corning NexCor fiber is an ITU-T G.652.D-compliant fiber and is fully compatible with Corning(R) SMF-28e(R) fiber, the widely deployed, global industry standard.

Pirelli's fiber optic communications cable solutions include Outside Plant cables designed for both long-haul backbone networks and metropolitan rings, premises cables to meet virtually any LAN installation or campus application need and last-mile solutions that include integrated optical networking equipment and cable for central office, multiple access and single-point applications, all designed for low installation costs and low maintenance costs.

Corning Incorporated introduced Corning NexCor fiber at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) 2004 in Los Angeles on Feb. 24, 2004.

Commercial quantities of cabled Corning NexCor fiber will be available beginning in March.
