Borland Process Consulting Services Advance Software Delivery Optimization for Organizations Across the Globe

Posted on: Monday, 10 April 2006, 09:00 CDT

Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ:BORL), the global leader for Software Delivery Optimization (SDO), today announced that enterprises around the world are strengthening their IT and software development processes with the help of Borland's global process improvement services. Since the acquisition of TeraQuest Metrics in early 2005, Borland has signed on and completed a multitude of successful customer implementations with organizations such as Certegy Check Services, Scientific Games Corporation, United Space Alliance, The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), Ericsson, General Motors, EDS, Raytheon, BT Group, Vodafone, AXA Belgium, Met Office, Systematic and LG CNS. These organizations chose to engage Borland for reasons ranging from improving software quality and increasing customer satisfaction, to reducing rework and complying with government and industry standards.

"Organizations today are increasingly seeking outside counsel and proven expertise in their quest to make software development a more mature, manageable and successful business process," said Chris Barbin, senior vice president of worldwide services at Borland. "Our seasoned and well-respected process consultants, combined with our industry expertise, proven tools and personalized approach, are what set Borland apart from the competition."

The process expertise and intellectual property that Borland inherited through the TeraQuest acquisition has been well integrated throughout the company over the past year. Borland continues to grow its process expertise throughout the world, with its certified process consultants acting as partners to Borland's worldwide sales team and playing a key role in a wide range of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) customer implementations.

In addition, the TeraQuest(R) process assets and intellectual property have become a foundation for Borland University, Borland's Process Asset Library and Borland Accelerate - all resources currently available to Borland customers. A wide range of process assets and templates, based on industry best-practices, are also being integrated within Borland's ALM platform, and are already being incorporated into Borland's solutions for IT Management & Governance, Requirements Definition and Management, Change Management and Lifecycle Quality Management.

A Global Focus on Process Improvement

While Borland's process improvement customers vary in their individual objectives, all see the benefits of making their software development processes more mature and predictable. For example, one large European telecommunications provider engaged Borland to improve productivity and quality to support the rollout of new services. Borland worked with the company to design and rollout a process that would help them achieve a Capability Maturity Model(R) Integration (CMMI(R)) Level 3 rating, and assist with the migration and implementation of a new set of ALM products. Through these efforts, the telecom provider claims to have automated 60 percent of their processes, saving over $500,000 annually and resulting in a five-fold reduction in software defects.

In the U.S., Borland process experts helped a global healthcare company improve their development processes in order to roll out higher-quality products and services in a timelier manner. This company needed to manage the complexity of delivering integrated IT solutions from 15 different software organizations (each with 50-250 developers). Borland experts facilitated improvement planning and delivered roadmaps and mentoring to help the individual organizations achieve desired objectives and drive measurable results. The company claims to have achieved a 12 percent increase in quality and a 22 percent increase in independent customer satisfaction scores. Additionally, targeted groups were found to be 35 percent more productive than those not included in the initiative.

Making Process Improvement More Approachable

Borland begins every process initiative in a holistic way that aligns process improvement with skills training and technology, bringing these components together to deliver quicker, more effective and more lasting results. Initiatives are conducted via Borland Accelerate, a customizable but proven approach that evaluates an organization's existing process maturity and identifies specific areas for improvement. Borland Accelerate is designed to transform an organization's process maturity level using a flexible four-phase improvement framework that applies best practices, templates, training and technology in a way that is tailored to the customer's unique needs and its urgency for change.

Borland process consultants, who average 22 years of software experience, include some of the industry's foremost thinkers in software development process improvement. Consultants have experience in process standards such as the Capability Maturity Model (CMM), IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT(R)) and Six Sigma. They are also experienced in leveraging the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK(R)). Their accomplishments include helping to develop CMM, as well as authoring the Practical Software Measurement (PSM) practices, the People CMM framework, the emerging Business Process Maturity Model (BPMM), and a number of books on process improvement best practices.
