Cingular Wireless Connects San Diego Installing Hundreds of New Cell Sites to Enhance Coverage and Services

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 April 2006, 06:00 CDT

SAN DIEGO, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless continues to forge ahead with the deployment of hundreds of new cell sites in the greater San Diego area, as part of the company's $800 million investment in the network across the state in 2006. This year, Cingular will invest $65 million and plans to install 126 new cell sites in the greater San Diego area.

Cingular's network investment will have a direct impact on enhancing coverage and services for residents in communities stretching from Oceanside to National City, to El Centro. In addition to the new cell sites, the investment will deliver other enhancements to improve customers' wireless experience, including portable generators, back-up batteries and new high- speed data features.

"It's great to see the investments we're making in our network creating significant strides for our San Diego customers," said Tammi Terrell, vice president and general manager, San Diego/Las Vegas/ Hawaii. "Cingular's investment shows our commitment to deliver the best network quality and coverage, great new products and convenient services to our customers."

Last year, Cingular invested $1 billion dollars in California, including more than $450 million in Southern California. This investment added more than 70 new cell sites throughout San Diego. In 2005, Cingular spent $6.5 billion on its network nationwide and plans to invest nearly that amount in 2006, bringing its overall investment since the company's 2004 acquisition of AT&T Wireless to nearly $13 billion.

While Cingular continues to invest in the network, the company also continues to deliver top-of-the-line wireless devices. Cingular customers can choose from an exciting array of wireless devices including the trendy new Motorola SLVR, Cingular's second handset capable of downloading iTunes directly from a PC. Another innovative service is Push to Talk (PTT) with new, unmatched features such as "availability" -- unique icons that allow Cingular PTT users to see if other PTT customers are available before making a PTT call. Cingular also offers a 30-day return policy, the longest nationwide trial period in the industry.

Additionally, the company provides an interactive mapping tool at all company operated and authorized, exclusive dealer retail locations and by calling 1-866-CINGULAR. This resource tool details wireless coverage information and is designed to answer a customer's specific coverage questions based on an address, street intersection, zip code or even a landmark. It enables the customer to view Cingular wireless coverage all the way down to the neighborhood street level while depicting the likelihood of coverage in various scenarios -- such as inside a vehicle or building.

The company's network growth relies on advanced GSM/EDGE technology. EDGE is the fastest national wireless data network in the country. Globally GSM is used by more than 1.5 billion people in 200-plus countries. Cingular customers with a compatible device and service plan can make calls in more than 170 countries and access data services in more than 95 countries. Cingular also was the first carrier in the world to operate a commercial UMTS/HSDPA network, which provides industry-leading data throughputs with speeds of 400 to 700 Kbps. Cingular has deployed UMTS/HSDPA in San Diego and 15 other markets with plans to have most of the United States' top 100 markets launched by the end of 2006.

* The ALLOVER network covers more than 270 million people. Coverage not available in all areas.
