Tibet opens second optic fiber cable
KUNMING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Tibet on Friday opened its second optic fiber cable communications system, nearly doubling its link capability with the outside world.
The 2,575.3-km cable runs from Lhasa, Tibet's capital, to Kunming, capital of the neighboring Yunnan Province, with 1,580 kms in the territory of Tibet.
Before the construction of the 36.95-million-yuan (4.47 million US dollars) cable project, which began in June 2003, Tibet had only one optic cable link running from Lhasa to Xining, capital of Qinghai Province.
According to China Telecom, one of China's largest telecommunications operators, Tibet's communications demands have outgrown a single optic fiber cable with the fast growth of local economy.
