Double-Take(R) Software Leads the Way With ESX-Based Replication of Virtual Machines

Double-Take(R) Software today announced the development of virtual machine replication and failover software for VMware ESX Server to provide continuous data protection for virtualized environments. Running natively on the ESX server, this much anticipated technology from Double-Take Software offers flexibility and choice by supporting multiple virtual machines including those running Windows(R), Linux, Novell or any other VMware-supported operating system. Because this new technology will replicate entire virtual disks, everything including the operating system, applications, patches and data are protected and ready for recovery at any time.

Double-Take Software will offer customers the industry's widest range of solutions for data replication and availability - allowing them to protect data on physical machines at the file level or at the virtual machine level on ESX Server. Customers will be able to use the same solution to replicate a physical Exchange server to a virtual target machine for disaster recovery as they do to replicate a Linux-based virtual appliance from one ESX server to another.

"While Double-Take is widely used today to protect Windows virtual machines or replicate physical Windows servers to virtual disaster recovery targets, we are seeing more and more customers run production workloads on a virtual infrastructure," said David Demlow, CTO, Double-Take Software. "These workloads are often running a variety of Linux distributions as well as Windows. We've designed something that will give our customers an option to protect any OS running as a guest on the ESX Server with the same level of protection and availability they've come to expect from our market-leading Double-Take product."

The product greatly reduces downtime and data loss in a virtual environment, making it an ideal component to disaster recovery and business continuity plans. With the new technology, changes are captured continuously, keeping the target virtual disk up to date and ready for failover, recovery and backup at any time. During an outage, the replicated virtual machine can be automatically started on the target server with the latest replicated data.

It is also designed to serve as an integral part of a comprehensive storage solution. It will support replication between any type of storage supported by the VMware ESX Server including direct attached SCSI or Fibre Channel SANs, as well as iSCSI and NAS storage in future versions of ESX Server.

Double-Take Software recently joined VMware's Technology Alliance Program - an initiative designed to allow VMware to team with industry-leading software companies to jointly develop solution stacks that provide value and cost savings to customers.
